By no means do I believe I am an expert in management or leadership. I do not believe anyone really is, as both of these topics shift and change continually, and good managers and leaders will forever be evolving and learning new strategies in both areas. My skill is in analysis and information gathering. My education and experience is in management and leadership. Combining these skills and experiences, provides me with some insight, but as I said, this blog with be devoted to providing useful information and articles on the topics, with my unique observations added.
My career as it stands now has been in the field of technology, which may be a slight bias when it comes to the topics of this blog. I have been employed in higher education in the central IT department since 2003, serving in various middle-management rolls. During this time I have attended a few internal supervisory training sessions, a few hiring courses and one corporate, week-long highly intensive management institute. In previous employment I was a college-level instructor on technology and a web designer/online editor.
My education has been in Liberal Arts, providing a well-rounded base of education that I can argue is of greater importance than a specialized degree. This may become a post in the near future as well. My Master's Degree is an MLA: Management and Leadership, my Bachelor's Degree in English.
Tip #001: Do not frown upon the English Major. Think of job description, and you will find one line or preference that states: "Person must have excellent communication skills, excellent writing skills, and be able to analyze situations." This is the definition of an English Degree. This is why most preferences begin with the statement : "Person must have [enter specific degree] or Bachelor degree and [enter number] years of experience.
So this is my background. A lot of education in Liberal Arts, a lot of study of management and leadership, and a lot of experience in technology (along with management and leadership). Thus we begin the blog.
Cheers!
- Tom.
